Here's a sure-fire winner for K-8 teachers to display at a Back-To-School event: a photo-driven essay project modeled after a powerful student-authored book. In her book, The Best Part of Me, award-winning photographer Wendy Ewald asked several children, “What is the best part of you?” She presented their answers in a sometimes funny, sometimes moving, deeply personal book that includes striking black-and-white photographs taken by the author. The concept is easy to model, and it's ideal to use as a springboard for discussions about body image, self-esteem, and diversity.
To enhance student responses and support the writing process, we've created a webpage that includes a wide variety of lesson resources: prompts, lesson plans, K-5 student samples, and writing models from professional authors. (Click to see the lesson plans.)
The student projects are easy to convert into a beautiful class book. (Two student-authored, digitally-published "PowerPoint" books are posted on our webpage, and we are planning to host a three-hour digital publishing workshop in September. (Check back in early September for dates and times.)
